Driving Toward A Safer Halloween For Kids
Whether you have a little Trick-or-Treater in your household or plan on being on the road on Halloween, the scary part of the evening has nothing to do with costumes but rather cars.
That’s because when parents drive their kids into suburban neighborhoods and let them out to go Trick-or-Treating, they’ll often follow slowly behind in the car. So what’s the danger in going 5-10 mph? It’s not always the speed that presents big problems – it’s focus. Think about it from the parent’s perspective. It’s dark. Your kids can dart from home to home in excitement. Your eyes are relentlessly focused on your child and you’re going slowly – but you’re also so focused that you don’t see another child right in front of you. And that’s where tragic results can occur.
Now multiply that one instance by many other vehicles with parents who are far more focused on their own kids than anyone else’s and you can see how good drivers can make horrible mistakes on Halloween. In fact, the Center for Disease Control claims that accidents as the result of a vehicle are four times more likely on Halloween.
Ensure It’s A Happier Halloween
Here are a few tips for drivers to keep Halloween safe and fun for all:
If a vehicle in front of you stops, don’t race around it to pass.
You may not see the driver dropping off children, who could then dart out in front of the car.
Assume that kids are focused on candy and friends, not cars.
Not all children will cross the street exactly where they should or be paying attention to other cars. This means you have to be even more diligent in looking out for kids – not just your own.
Use your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
If you’re parked temporarily while dropping off kids or waiting for them as they Trick-or-Treat nearby, turn on your hazard lights to give other drivers a good idea of your vehicle’s location.
It goes without saying but let’s make sure we say it anyway – never use your cell phone while driving. That goes for any day and time, really, but particularly during a holiday in which your full attention can’t be taken away from your surroundings.
It’s a world full of hazards.
